This is smaller version of the traditional Ugly Stick commonly played in Newfoundland.  It measures approximately 8" high.  Ugly Sticks are commonly made with a mop, tin can and bottle or beer caps on a nail to make a jingling sound.  After that they can be personalized and jingle bells and various other items can be added.

Each one is a one of a kind creation.


An Ugly Stick is a traditional musical instrument in Newfoundland, commonly used in kitchen parties and mummering often accompanied by accordions and fiddles. These are usually make with an old mop handle and a rubber boot attached to the bottom.

Anyone can learn to play. Hold it by the mop handle and use the stick to tap and jiggle the tambourine, tin can or bells while lifting and dropping it on the table to create a rhythmic sound.
